2008 APWA NorCal Awards Program

The Northern California Chapter seeks to recognize public works employees and projects dedicated to improving the quality of life for present and future generations in the Bay Area.

It is time to nominate projects or individuals for 2008’s Chapter Awards Program.

The annual NorCal Chapter APWA Awards program is your opportunity to recognize someone for a job well done, a contractor who performed an outstanding job on a project, or a special project that was recently completed.

NOMINATION CATEGORIES

AWARD OF MERIT

Facilities and Grounds – the Facilities and Grounds Award of Merit seeks to inspire excellence and dedication in the public sector by recognizing the outstanding career service achievements of facilities and/or grounds management professionals. The focus of this award is the recognition of exceptional leadership, management, or work in the field of facilities and/or grounds. Download nomination form.

Public Fleet – the Public Fleet Award of Merit seeks to inspire excellence and dedication in the public sector by recognizing the outstanding career service achievements of the public fleet professionals. The primary focus of this award is the recognition of exceptional leadership, management, and operations of public sector fleets. Download nomination form.

Public Right-of-Way – the Public Right-of-Way Award of Merit seeks to inspire excellence and dedication in the public sector by recognizing the outstanding career service achievements of public right-of-way professionals. The primary focus of this award is recognition of public rights-of-way personnel which demonstrates that all stakeholders share the public rights-of-way in harmony and preserve them in the best interest and benefit of the public. Public Works Emergency Management – the Public Works Emergency Management Award of Merit seeks to inspire excellence and dedication in the public sector by recognizing the outstanding career service achievements of public works emergency management professionals. Download nomination form.

Solid Waste – the Solid Waste Award of Merit seeks to inspire excellence and dedication in the private and public sectors by recognizing the outstanding service achievements of solid waste professionals. The primary focus of this award is recognition of exceptional management, operation and maintenance of public sector solid waste operations. Download nomination form.

Transportation – the Transportation Award of Merit seeks to recognize outstanding achievement in the area of transportation and to inspire excellence and dedication in the public sector by recognizing outstanding career service achievements of public transportation professionals. The primary focus of this award is recognition of exceptional leadership, management, or work by an individual through a significant transportation-related project or program. Water Resources – the Water Resources Award of Merit is to recognize outstanding accomplishments or achievements by individuals providing services in the field of water resources and whose contributions have had a positive impact on the profession of public works. Download nomination form.

Administration/Finance/Support – the Administration/Finance/Support Award of Merit is to recognize outstanding accomplishments or achievements by individuals providing services to the public works field. This award recognizes that public works could not function without excellent support to those in the field. Download nomination form.

COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT AWARD

The Community Involvement Award recognizes public works employees who are also leaders in their community; encourages public works professionals to become active leaders in their community; and fosters public trust in public works professionals through recognition of outstanding community leadership. YOUNG LEADER AWARD

The Young Leader Award recognizes and encourages young APWA members who have demonstrated an initial commitment to the profession and the association and show potential for future growth within the association. The award promotes the concept that length of career does not necessarily indicate leadership abilities or potential for service. Download nomination form.

PUBLIC WORKS LEADER OF THE YEAR

The Public Works Leader of the Year seeks to inspire excellence and dedication in the public service by recognizing the outstanding career service achievements of individual from either the public or private sectors. The primary focus of the award is on career service to the public works profession rather than on any one event or projects. The individual must be in active service as of the date of nomination of the year he or she is considered. Any group or individual may nominate candidates. Self nominations are not accepted. APWA membership is not required. Download nomination form.

PUBLIC WORKS PROJECT OF THE YEAR

This award recognizes the partnership between the managing agency, the consultant/architect/engineer, and the contractor who, working together, complete public works projects. Awards are divided into five categories which are further divided based on the cost of the project (less than $2 million and greater than $2 million).

PUBLIC WORKS CONTRACTOR OF THE YEAR

This award recognizes contractors on public projects that perform well beyond expected performance levels. Contractors recognized will have completed projects on time, and to the agency’s satisfaction. The quality of the finished work will have exceeded expectations. They may also have accommodated the public in a way that reduces inconveniences during construction to the lowest practical levels. If there were minor changes in scope or conditions, the contractor may have absorbed those changes into the contract with a minimum of difficulty. Download nomination form.
